"Awakening" is a song by AURORA (initial releases as Aurora Aksnes). It was her first and only single released on label Coco & Co. It was written by Aurora and Odd Martin Skålnes. On March 23, 2014 the song was officially released worldwide.[1]
Background[]
Aurora wrote this song when she was 15 or 14 and first recorded it when she was 16. She recounted producing it together with Odd Martin Skålnes.[2][3][4] An early version of the song was published on P3 Urørt (a site for Norwegian unsigned artists) on April 16, 2013[5] and on SoundCloud the following month.[6] This was before Aurora signing her record deals and it was one of her few available tracks in those early years, it was used extensively in promotion. After successful gigs at by:Larm, the track became Ukas Urørt (untouched track of the week) at P3 Urørt. It was officially released shortly after in a slightly different mix.
According to ETEP, the single reached one million streams on Spotify in 2014.[7]
A third version of the song ("2015 Version")[8] is an extra track on the vinyl release of the Running with the Wolves EP. Magnus Skylstad is also credited as producer for this version.
About the song[]
Aurora said to NRK P3:
"It's about a girl who is going on a journey. An outer and an inner journey. About disappointment and hope. I like that listeners can interpret the stories I tell themselves. It gives more room for the imagination."[2][3]
And to Ja Ja Ja Music:
"I don't want to ruin the feeling you might get listening to it... If it makes you happy or sad I want it to stay like that. But it's about a girl, experiencing all kinds of different things… but it ends with light. I can say that."[9]
Lyrics[]
With a tiny rope and a bag of stones
And all her broken wishing bones
She's going in, she's going home
Oh, this little golden knight
Fighting every day behind the light
Behind the light
Walking faster down the street
Red eyes and no shoes on her feet
Going on this journey, determined to complete
This is farewell, this is goodnight
The last time she will see the daylight
See the daylight
And she's going on a journey
Always walking down the road
And the water is always calling
"My little child, please come home"
That's when she went away
Away from the light of day
Standing by the riverside
Patiently waiting for the tide
To come along, to come along
The water's going to her feet
And on her body, wind so cold and sweet
So cold and sweet
And she's going on a journey
Always walking down the road
And the water is always calling
"My little child, please come home"
And the stars were brightly shining
When she reached out they were gone
And the water started calling
"My little child, please come home"
Feel the water in her body, water's never going out
Feel the water in her body, water's never going out
Feel the water in her body, water's never going out
Feel the water in her body, water's never going out
Feel the water in her body, water's never going out
Feel the water in her body, water's never going out
Feel the water in her body, water's never going out
Feel the water in her body, water's never going out
And she's going on a journey
Always walking down the road
And the water is always calling
"My little child, please come home"
And the stars were brightly shining
When she reached out they were gone
And the water started calling
"My little child, please come home"
When a shiny light hit her eye
And she turned around and climbed towards the sky
Towards the sky

Music video[]
A music video for this song was filmed back in April 2014. According to Robin Larsen, an associate of Aurora, the music video for the song was published on YouTube as an unlisted video but got deleted in 2015. Several images and short clips appeared elsewhere.
More short video snippets of the music video can be found here and here. It is likely that Øyvind Svanes Lunde was the cinematographer, as he shared some clips of the video in his 2014 compilation reel.
Behind the scenes photos were posted by Vidar Langeland.[10]
