"Black Water Lilies" is the twelfth track on the album All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend.[1] It was written by Aurora, Magnus Skylstad and Odd Martin Skålnes, and produced by Skylstad and Skålnes.
About the song[]
Aurora told The 405 that this song was inspired by a dream she had of "a magical land, filled with wonder." She sings of floating on a river and ends up in a place surrounded by a thousand black water lilies.
"It was originally seven black water lilies, [...] but a thousand sounded better."[2][3]
She said in another interview:
"Black Water Lilies was a dream I had. The melody was playing in the background. And I was dreaming that there was a hand, and I grabbed it, and it took me underwater. And there was a river, under the water, running down. And I floated on the river, under the water, and I came to this magic place with lots of black water lilies – floating on the water – which was underneath the water. It was a very strange dream. When I woke up I ran straight to the piano and wrote the song."[4]
Lyrics[]
When I am on a boat
I float, I know I can never drown
I see underwater land
The wind, the wind is the only sound
Take your hand and I go under
I'm under and above
Take your hand and I go under
I'm under and above
On the river
I'm floating in
Under water
I'm diving into the ocean
A thousand black water lilies
In the river
I'm floating in
Under water
I'm diving into the ocean
A thousand black water lilies
Black water lilies
Arms are reaching for
My arms I can see no more
We dance as we float around
We head towards the ocean floor
Take your hand and I go under
I'm under and above
Take your hand and I go under
I'm under and above
On the river
I'm floating in
Under water
I'm diving into the ocean
A thousand black water lilies
In the river
I'm floating in
Under water
I'm diving into the ocean
A thousand black water lilies
(A thousand black water lilies)
I am warm
Rolling down
And I am reborn
(Water lilies)
(Water lilies)
(Water lilies)
(Water lilies)
(Black water lilies)
Lyrics transcribed by listening.
