"Sofia" is a song by Askjell featuring AURORA and Iris. It was officially released worldwide as a single on June 11, 2021, together with its radio edit.[1] The song is included on Askjell's 2022 debut album Everything Will Be Ok (stylized in lowercase).[2]

About the song[]

Askjell wrote the song after getting to know the story of Sofia Pastrana Martinez, an eight year-old girl from Australia who had terminal cancer. She dreamed about being a world-renowned artist, and Askjell promised that he would make that happen. Askjell asked Sofia who she wanted to feature as vocals in the song, and since she liked both Aurora and Iris, she chose them. Before she died, Sofia got to hear an early version of the song.[3]

The song was performed at a concert at Håkonshallen on May 31, 2021.[4] Askjell wanted to introduce the story behind it, but decided not to:

"I would have cried a lot. She deserves her story to be told in full".[5]

Lyrics[]

There are almost no lyrics for the sung part, which consists mostly of vocalizations.

Sofia

This is not my story, I was just inspired by the bravest girl I never got to know.

Her biggest dream was becoming an artist and have her art seen by a world she never got the chance to see for herself.

If the universe had some sense of morality, she would already be in the Louvre with the greatest because on the 6th of June 2020, she died from a cancer so rare, she was the first child in medical history to suffer from it.

But I refuse to let her dream die with her, so let me tell you about the bravest girl I never got the chance to know.

Her name was Sofia.
