"The Devil Is Human" (originally titled "Father Don't Blame Us" and "Father" / "The Devil Is a Human")[note 1] is a song by AURORA. Initially a vinyl-exclusive track on some versions of the album The Gods We Can Touch, it was officially released worldwide in other formats on July 8, 2022.[2]
Background[]
The song appeared on concept track lists for The Gods We Can Touch[3][4][5], but it was eventually scrapped on the final version of the album.
About the song[]
Aurora said of the song in a press release:
"We get sexualised by the world, and yet shamed for being sexual. They want to possess you and own you, and even decide what you get to do with your own body. We are not free until all of us are free. The world have tried for many years to burn women who were strong, who were brilliant, brave and free spirited. The devil is human, or apparently the devil is a woman. You can burn the skin we live in, but you cannot burn the witch away. #ourbodyourchoice."[6]
In an interview with Music Backstage she said the song was inspired by "female energies":
"The world today, as it has throughout history, turns against women when it comes to our freedom, our right to vote, or to do what we want with our bodies. We have the right to be innocent, real and respectful at the same time as sexy and grown up. It would be important for men to be able to show their vulnerable side and cry, this does not make them less masculine. We could allow them much more feminine energy, but at the same time they wouldn't blame us for carrying it. I wanted to put out a song about that. The devil is a man, or as it seems lately, the Devil is actually a free woman, and that scares the world, I think. I think it's important to sing to my sisters, whether women or trans women."[7][8]
Lyrics[]
Father, don't blame us for trying to live
For trying to love, for wanting more
Father, don't blame us for trying to bleed
Like real human beings and nothing more
Why did you dress our pleasure up as greed?
Why you're limiting our love, taking sunlight from the seed?
Why did you give us hearts we don't understand
Like an apple in our hand that you never let us have?
And I hear you don't like it
I don't care if you don't
Father, don't blame us for trying to live
For trying to love, for wanting more
Father, don't blame us for trying to bleed
Like real human beings and nothing more
Oh, do you envy how I'm free
How the life in me is real, running barеfoot through the fields?
How does it hurt how I don't look at you with fear?
Do you like to watch me kneel, cause the way it makes you feel?
And I hear you don't like it
I don't care if you don't
Father, don't blame us for trying to live
For trying to love, for wanting more
Father, don't blame us for trying to bleed
Like real human beings and nothing more
You can burn the skin I live in
But you cannot burn the witch away
